Michael Armitage. Paradise Edict

NCAI is please to be contributing to the exhibition "Michael Armitage. Paradise Edict" at Haus der Kunst with a single room display of a selection of the East African artists Asaph Ne'gethe Macua, Elimo Njau, Theresa Musoke, Jak Katarikawe, Meek Gichugu and Sane Wadu. Assembled under the heading "Mwili Akili, na Roho" ("Body, Mind and Spirit"), the works cover a range of figurative practices from the 1970s to the 1990s, by artist who were both formally trained as well as self-taught.

The exhibition "Michael Armitage. Paradise Edict" is organised by Haus der Kunst with the contribution of NCAI, and is curated by Anna Schnieder, with assistance from Dimona Stockle.

NCAI is excited to present the first retrospective exhibition of the painter, poet and writer, Sane Wadu. Wadu came to prominence in Nairobi in the mid 1980s when he began exhibiting paintings at Gallery Watatu. His acutely critical paintings and writings reflected upon society, culture, religion and the governments of his time. His presence  and extraordinary body of direct narrative paintings was pivotal in the creation of the Ngecha Village artists collective. The Collective formed of largely self taught artists, began a movement that came to dominate ways of making and thinking in the Kenyan art scene throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Starting with the very first painting that Wadu made in gouache on paper, 'Bless This Our Daily Bread' in 1984, this exhibitions follows the artists changing language, materials, subjects and ideas over more than 30 years.
