About the event
Kaspale’s Playground (2020 - 2021) grapples with public memory, intervening in a specific moment in Kenya's recent history. In this. performance/installation Syowia Kyambi brings to the fore the many layers of violence that underpinned the 24-year rule Kenya’s former president, Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi.
Developed out of a need to engage with the post-independence period in Kenya’s history, and a desire to dismantle a symbol of fear and oppression, the performance seeks to honour a specific moment in Kenya’s history, the Mother’s Protest of 1992. Kaspale’s Playground publicly claims both the remembering and the telling of this history in ways that are not mediated by a supposed shared national memory.
