About the event

The project explores repair, relationality, and social memory, positioning Phoshoza as both a method and framework for engaging histories of sound, ritual, and cultural sovereignty.


Drawing from Princess Magogo’s family archive, which includes field recordings, photographs, film, and matrilineal oral histories, Phoshoza examines how these materials can be read as sonic objects that speak, resonate, and carry stories across generations. Rather than functioning as a biographical intervention, the project opens conceptual pathways for understanding how cultural posture, ritual, and memory are sequenced through the archive and continue to shape contemporary thought.


The workshop will be led by Nombuso Mathibela, a cultural worker and writer based in Johannesburg. Nombuso is part of the Phoshoza collective and the founder of Jewel Scents & Song, a Pan-African research and production studio.
