Resounding Rhizomes looks at how seeds and plants move through the world. Travelling across oceans and borders, they take root in new soils, enter new diets and economies, and settle into new rituals and languages. In this process, they participate in transforming the places and the people they reach and are in turn transformed. The exhibition curated by Aude Christel Mgba and developed in partnership with Sustaining the Otherwise as part of the multilocational program Practicing Otherwise.

The artists in the exhibition trace the relationships that evolve between people, seeds, and plants through everyday use, ranging from a domestic to an industrial, and global scale. The artworks reveal how those same relationships create alternative cartographies and networks across broader geographies over longer spans of time. The exhibition highlights the use and knowledge of seeds and plants themselves, and explores how the expansion of global power continues to shape the presence of plant matter in different parts of daily life, as well as the relationships people form with plants. The food we eat, the communal work of cultivation, the extractive dynamics of plantation labor, and the earlier uses and lives of plant materials adopted for making all carry this history. Human action and the interests of power shape our relationships with flora, and those same relationships offer an entry point for reading and understanding systems of power.

All use of plant matter on various scales grows from and generates knowledge about the natural world. This knowledge is a valuable resource that moves through kitchens, schools, markets, institutions, families, friendships, and trade. It passes across generations and across geographies, through formalised and organic interactions and spaces. The exhibition treats this knowledge as a way to understand how communities relate to plants, to land, and to each other.
